Ginger root (which is often called ginger even in Greece) is a popular herb, to which medicinal properties are attributed, but it is also used in cooking. It is the underground rhizome of a small plant, belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, of the genus: Zingiber. Ginger has been used since ancient times for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It contains many components that have been linked to health benefits (essential oils), such as zingiberene, gingerone, shogaol, farnesine and small amounts of β-phylladrine, cineole, and citral. The root of the herb is low in calories, but it is a very rich source of many essential nutrients and vitamins, such as pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5), which are essential for the bodys health. It is also a good source of minerals such as potassium, manganese, copper and magnesium.
